Sweet Charity, The Nest and HEAL

In 2005 a core group of community stakeholders in Lincoln County had a vision of a world free of violence and oppression. At that time Lincoln County had the highest per capita rate of domestic violence in the state of New Mexico. As a result, the group formed HEAL, Help End Abuse for Life, and received 501(c)3 status from the IRS in August of 2005.

The Mission of HEAL is stated as follows: We coordinate and offer support services and safe haven for victims and survivors of domestic violence. We do this by advocating for positive social change, providing training and education, building alliances, securing and developing resources and influencing public policy and attitudes about domestic violence.

In 2007 HEAL opened The Nest Shelter, a 6500 square foot domestic violence shelter with highly secure facilities for women and their children. The shelter provides services to victims of domestic violence for anywhere from one night up to 90 days. Depending on the circumstances of each individual, the program may be extended beyond 90 days. Individuals don’t have to live in the shelter to receive services.

The shelter has individual rooms with bunk beds to accommodate families. There are a few adjoining rooms available for larger families as well as ADA rooms if needed. An available kitchen allows residents the opportunity to make their own meals. Food donations are always appreciated.

The HEAL Board of Directors has hired Michelle Schmidt-Castillo as the new director. Schmidt-Castillo ran previous DV programs and has prior experience in law enforcement. Her first day was June 3.

The Sweet Charity Resale Boutique is an upscale resale shop with all proceeds going to support The Nest. Nest clients can shop with a coupon to purchase items they may need in their new homes as they graduate from the shelter. Gently used donations to Sweet Charity are always welcome and are tax deductible. Donations may be dropped off any time between 10 am and 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Shop fabulous vintage finds and a wide range of everyday items to support the Nest. Sweet Charity donates any items they cannot use to God’s House of Tularosa so your donations will never be unappreciated or unused.

The HEAL and the Nest’s Annual Golf Tournament will be Sunday, September 22nd at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Championship Golf Course. Contact the Nest at 575-378-6378 if you would like to be a part of this fun-filled, prize-filled event.
